My pursuit of things remarkably simple
As a state
legislator, president of a web development company and husband, I find
myself constantly getting pulled many different directions. Lately,
I've focused on trying to simplify my life. As a 200 pound distance
runner in college, I was used to working hard and was trained that the
harder you worked the more you got out of it. I have been blessed with
a very supportive family, good health and lots of drive. I discovered
early on that the harder I pushed myself, the more I could do. I
enjoyed being super busy and always did things well beyond my age. The
more things I did, the more opportunities that presented themselves.
And I was always able to do just about everything I put my mind to,
even if it meant I would get even less sleep. I just found a way to do
it.
Over the last year and a half, I finally maxed out. I hit the point
that I can't just work harder to do more. I also had some family events
that helped put life into perspective.
I'm now very focused on doing more with less and working smarter not
harder. It's not like I wasn't trying to do that before. But now it is
a priority. It is amazing how liberating a feeling it is to do that.
I'm now getting more accomplished than I was before AND I'm doing a lot
more fun things to boot. I'm a fan of the GTD (Getting Things Done)
system and SendOutCards. Both are helping me simplify my
life.
I'm now making time to have fun. (When I wasn't scheduling it in, I
rarely found time to do the things I really enjoy, outside of
work.)
