Sonos and other lower cost alternatives

I stopped by one of our local home electronics stores recently, where they showed me Sonos. It is a wireless, multi-room music system. You can have as many zones as you want to purchase and drive them all from one music source. It lets each zone listen to its own choice of music, or you can select "party" mode and have them all listen to the same thing. The neat thing is that you can control all of the zones from one controller.

It is a bit pricey though, so make sure you've taken your heart medication before you look at the price tag.

A good friend of mine recommended the Omnifi DMS1. They have been out for several years now, but it still appears to be a nice alternative. The DMS1 uses an existing 802.11b network to connect wirelessly to any Windows PC to access your music collection. According to the Amazon reviews, you can connect multiple DMS1s to your computer to create separate music zones and listen to different music in each room.

At $39.95 each, they are quite a bit more affordable. No "party" mode, but hey, how much trouble is it to turn each zone on and off. I guess I'll let you know after I get a couple.
